How Does the Fire Chief's Resource Manual Work?

Insert the CD-ROM in your computer and open it. You will see the contents of the CD-ROM displayed. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on you computer, open the Acrobat Reader 6.0.1 folder. Open the folder for the type of computer you have (Macintosh or Windows). Launch the installer by double clicking it. Follow the installation instructions.

Double click on the "Start Here.pdf" file. A document containing the End-User License Agreement and background on how the CD is put together will be displayed. Make sure you read and understand the terms for use of the CD-ROM.

At the bottom of the Start Here file is a link that will take you to the Table of Contents. After you have read and understood the Start Here information, you can start using the CD-ROM by clicking the Table of Contents file. Please note the any of the text in Blue is a link that will take you to another location in the CD-ROM. Unlike a link on a web page, only one click is required.

The Table of Contents is broken into three sections:

Introduction
Manual SectionsDetailed
Section Listings

The Introduction explains the layout of the Table of Contents and how the files are named. The Manual Sections breaks apart the CD-ROM into major topic headings. Clicking any of the topic headings will jump you to that section of the Table of Contents. In this example, I clicked on the Department Standard Operating Guidlines link.

The contents of that section will be displayed. If you wish to see the complete section as one file, click on the Binder 7 link. Each section (except the Appendixes) has a Binder link allowing you to view the complete section as one document. In this example I wish to see the Backing a Vehicle sample as a pdf file. I would click the 07 003 04- link in the pdf column.

The window will jump to the link you clicked on displaying the file you requested in a new window. To return to the Table of Contents, close this window but do not exit the reader program.

On a Macintosh, click the red close dot on the left upper corner of the display window.
On a Windows system click the lower X box on the right upper corner of the display window.

After looking at the sample, I decided to use it for my department. After going back to the Table of Contents, I clicked on the 07 003 04- link in the word column. The following warning may be displayed. Click the open button to launch the file. If you do not wish to see the warning again, click the "Do not show this message again" box.

Note: you must have Word installed on you system to use the Word files.

The file will open as a Read Only file. To save it, select Save As from the file menu.
Customize the sample for your deppartment. Hometown is used through out for the fire department name so the change to you departments name may be done globely.

You will also need to delete the Resource Manual section teaxt and page markings in the header and footer.

Now the sample is ready for your department's use.
