The Iowa Fire Chiefs Association, in partnership with the Fire Service Training Bureau of the State Fire Marshal Division, has designed this 2025 Volunteer Fire Chiefs Workshop to assist fire chiefs and fire officersd of volunteer and combination fire departments. Chiefs and officers from career departments are also invited to attend. Information will be provided to help officers understand their roles and responsibilities.
This workshop will be held at the Theater Classroom - Building 3583 (B-58) at the Camp Dodge Joint Maneuver Training Center in Johnston, IA (near the Fire Service Training Bureau).
A $25 cost share wwill be used to help offset the cost of this workshop. Handout materials will be provided.

Tomme Tysdal – NERIS: We will discuss requirements for incident reporting in Iowa and our road to reporting to National Emergency Reporting Information System (NERIS). We will also discuss reporting in the past and best practices moving forward.

Dr. Rui Li: This presentation will include the research findings from previous and ongoing projects on firefighting PPE contamination level and mechanism study and decontamination methods and efficiency study. Exposure levels to fire ground contaminants and carcinogens for firefighters will be discussed. The types and concentrations of toxic chemicals found on firefighting PPE before and after decontamination approach will be discussed. Various cleaning efficiency using different cleaning methods of PPE will be discussed and key contributing factors identified. Best practice of effective PPE cleaning will be discussed.
